Dhaka-- Canada will provide a grant of CDN$ 15 million equivalent to approximately Tk 53 crore over a period of 5 years as technical assistance for legal forms aimed at protecting children’s and consumers’ rights. The money will be given under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed here yesterday between Bangladesh and Canada on “The Legal Reform Project” that also seeks measures to protect the poor and greater public and corporate accountability. By strengthening institutions and processes of the public sector, the project seeks to reduce “the arbitrary exercise of power to which the poor are vulnerable”. Economic Relations Division (ERD) secretary Dr AKM Masihur Rahman and Canadian High Commissioner in Dhaka David Preston inked the MOU on behalf of their respective governments. The areas of activities of the project would include child protection, juvenile justice, consumer protection, legal aid, alternative dispute resolution, modernizing the company law, criminal justice, strengthening of the Ministry of Law, legislative drafting and law commission. |
